How to Store HayHow you store your rabbit's hay is very important. There are a few easy steps you can take to ensure that it stays fresh. Improper storage can result in your hay spoiling or getting moldy, which could make your rabbit sick. Here are 4 tips on storing your rabbit's hay: 1. Darkness Store your rabbit's hay somewhere dark and away from direct sunlight. When exposed to direct sunlight, it can bleach hay, causing a decrease in nutrients and discoloration (yellowing). 2. Keep it Dry It is critical that you keep your hay stored in a dry location away from moisture and humidity. Moisture can lead to mold growing on your hay. 3. Air Hay naturally contains some moisture, so you want to make sure you store your hay where it can breathe. Avoid containers with a tight seal and without ventilation. 4. Temperature Mold is most likely to grow on your hay in warm temperatures. Keep your hay stored somewhere cool and away from heat sources (vents, sun). When selecting what to store your hay in, look for something that is opaque (keeps light out) and has ventilation. The photos above show some ideas of what you can use to store hay in. An open card board box or a dark coloured plastic bin with the lid off and/or holes drilled into the top and sides are some low-cost options. You could also use laundry baskets!
